Room Policies
Cleanliness/Hygiene - Residents are responsible for maintaining healthy conditions in their rooms. The residence life staff will conduct room checks periodically. Residence directors may require a student to clean a room that does not meet with Residence Director's standard. A failed room check may also result in a monetary sanction. Cleaning supplies are available in the Resident Assistant Office. Some residential living facilities have private bathrooms. Students are responsible for purchasing cleaning supplies for bathrooms. Students who live in apartments are responsible for purchasing their own cleaning supplies.
Decorating - Residence Life encourages individual expression when decorating your room, however; health, safety, and fire issues take precedence over individual tastes. Do not cover or remove smoke detectors and overhead lighting. Residents may not paint their room Residents are responsible for any damage to university property. The items not allowed for use in decorating your room include, but are not limited to:
- Items that hang from the ceiling (i.e. flammable cloth, plants).
- Screws, nails, or hooks in walls, ceiling, closets, furniture, or woodwork.
- Decals, bumper stickers, or contact paper affixed to school property.
- Tape used on wood or painted surfaces.
- Material used to hang posters that leaves marks (please use sticky tack or Command Strips).
- Posters or pictures that are inconsistent with the University’s Mission Statement.
- Alcohol bottles, cans, and posters.
- Furniture that does not meet current fire safety code.
- Straw, leaves, and branches.
- Live Christmas trees.
Items not allowed for use in decorating bulletin boards and windows include, but are not limited to:
- Posters advertising alcohol or illegal substances.
- Photographs of students consuming or possessing alcohol or illegal substances.
- Anything inconsistent with the University’s Mission Statement.
Furnishings - University furniture must remain in assigned rooms at all times. Lofting and bunking beds is permitted providing that the student signs a liability release form and follows University procedure. Bunking and lofting materials and procedures are available from resident assistants. Bottom bunks must remain on the floor. A clear visual and physical path must remain between the windows and the door of the room. Upon check out, residents must leave the room in the same configuration as check in. Submit any requests for repair and maintenance issues at the RA Office.
Pets - Pets, except for fish are not permitted in the residence halls. Aquarium capacity may not exceed one 10-gallon tank per room. Students requiring a service or emotional support animal must contact the Director of Student Academic Support Services.
Room Entry - While the University respects every student’s right to privacy, it reserves the right to authorize University employees, including maintenance personnel to enter a room at any time without prior notice for designated purposes that include, but are not limited to:
- Providing custodial, maintenance, or housekeeping work.
- Determining compliance with safety, health, and fire regulations.
- Conducting an inventory of University property.
- Conducting a room check for cleanliness.
- Responding to an indication of danger to life, health, or property.
- Acting on a reasonable belief that a violation of a University regulation, local ordinance, and/or state or federal statute has occurred or is in progress.
Before entering the room, authorized personnel will knock on the door, announce themselves, and pause for a response.
Room Search – Residence Life reserves the right to conduct a room search without prior notice. In the event of a room search, any property seized at the time may be used in University disciplinary proceedings and/or turned over to the local authorities. Generally, property taken in a room search is not returned.
Sharps Containers - Sharps containers are required for residents who have a medical condition that requires injections. Sharp containers are available in the Health Center. We ask that you make a member of the Residence Hall staff aware of your need for this service.
Telephones - Student rooms are not equipped with phones. Courtesy phones are located in the main campus traditional halls. Assisi Heights, Bonaventure, Vianney and Padua do not have courtesy phones.
