Quiet Hours and Open House Policy

Respect and courtesy for others are an essential part of living in a community. Residents should respect each other’s rights to an atmosphere conducive to studying and sleeping. The University expects residents to decrease the volume of any noise disturbing other residents when asked by either residents or staff.  Violations of the quiet hour’s policy are subject to disciplinary action including but not limited to warnings, fines, or community service.

Quiet Hours - Quiet hours allow the residents time for study, sleep, and prayer.  Residents and guests must abide by quiet hours throughout the building, as well as in areas surrounding the residence halls. Campus quiet hours are as follows:

  • Sunday through Thursday, 11:00 pm - 9:00 am
  • Friday and Saturday, Midnight - 9:00 am

Courtesy Hours - For the good of the community, courtesy hours allow for interaction and fun in the residents halls, while still maintaining an atmosphere that allows students to study, sleep and relax. Residents must comply with any request to decrease the volume of noise. The Residence Life staff may determine that an activity is inappropriate in the hall. Residents are required to respect the needs of the community by maintaining a reasonable level of noise at all times.

Extended Quiet Hours - During semester exams, extended quiet hours are observed from the last day of class through the last final exam in order to promote studying.  The times for extended quiet hours are posted in each hall.

Visitors and Guests - A visitor is any person (including other students) who do not reside in the hall.  A resident of that hall must admit visitors to the hall. Residents must announce and escort visitors of opposite sex (“Man/Woman in the Hall”) as they walk down the hall.  Member of the opposite sex cannot loiter in the halls of any residence but must go directly to a common area. A parent or legal guardian must accompany children under the age of 12 at all times.

A guest is any nonresident of the hall (including other students) who is staying overnight.  Students are required to register guests must be registered with the Residence Life staff. Guest registration forms are available in the Resident Assistant Offices of each residence hall. Children 12 and under cannot be overnight guests in the residence halls. Guest visits may not exceed three days per semester without prior approval of the residence director.  With the permission of the Residence Life staff, guest may stay additional days for a fee of $35 per night. Students may not host guests of the opposite sex. Guests may not stay during orientation week, exam week, graduation, or any time that the halls are officially closed.

Residents are responsible for the actions of their guests and visitors. If visitors or guests are in violation of University or residence hall policies, or federal, state, or local laws, they may be asked to leave the facility immediately and their privileges may be revoked permanently. Residents are responsible for the actions of their guests and may be subject to disciplinary action based upon the action of their guests and visitors. Residents may also lose the privilege of hosting guests.  Guests and visitors must have photo identification while on campus and will be required to present it if asked by a University official.

Open House Policy - This policy encourages healthy interaction between all the residents of our campus community. Contrary to a visitation policy that may encourage inappropriate intimacy and exclusivity, the open house philosophy encourages an atmosphere where all are welcome to move about and visit the hall. Open House hours are Friday, 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm, Saturday 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm, and Sunday, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm. During this time, members of the opposite sex are may visit in residence hall rooms. In the spirit of the policy, room doors must be open at all times. In the spirit of hospitality, all members of the opposite sex must be escorted.

Residents may visit at other times in the designated common areas of each hall.

The hours for visiting with the opposite sex in residence hall lounges, common rooms, and kitchens are as follows:

  • Main Lounges:

Sunday through Thursday, 8:00 am - 1:00 am; Friday and Saturday, 8:00 am - 2:00 am

  • All Other Common Areas:
