Hall Policies

Alcohol - Residence Hall policies concerning the consumption of alcohol comply with the Ohio State Liquor Law.  This law prohibits anyone under the age of 21 from consuming, possessing, purchasing or distributing alcohol to another person.  Residents and guests who are age 21 and older may consume alcohol in the privacy of their room with the doors closed, provided they observe the following policies:

  • Students 21 years of age and older may not serve, provide, or purchase alcohol for residents or guests who are under the age of 21.
  • Open containers of alcohol are not permitted in any public areas of the residence halls. (The residence director may give permission upon request for the consumption of alcohol in specific areas of the residence hall.)
  • If a student 21 or older has a roommate under the age of 21 it must be clear that the alcohol is being consumed by the of age student.
  • Students who are of age (21 and older) may not serve alcohol when residents or guests who are under the age of 21 (with the exception of the roommate) are present.
  • Multi-quart containers, multiple cases, kegs, multiple bottles of wine or liquor, beer balls, and alcohol-related paraphernalia in the residence halls.
  • Students under the age of 21 may not have alcohol in their residence hall room

Appliances - Overloading electrical circuits presents fire and safety hazards. Appliances not allowed in residence hall rooms include, but are not limited to, the following: open element appliances, space heaters, hot plates, deep fat fryers, rotisseries, toasters, toaster ovens, halogen lamps, sun lamps, air conditioners, wax warmers, and Foreman grills. Residence directors may request the removal of other appliances at their discretion. Students are encouraged to use power strips and surge protectors with all appliances.

Babysitting - Babysitting is not permitted in the residence halls.  A parent must accompany any child under the age of 12 who is visiting the hall.

Bicycle Storage - Bicycle racks are located outside of the residence halls. Bicycles may not be stored in common areas or in a stairwell of the hall and will be removed by hall staff. Bicycles may be stored in your room. The University is not responsible for bicycles that are damaged or stolen.

Drug Paraphernalia - Articles normally associated with the use of illegal and/or substances that are not allowed by University policy are not permitted in the residence halls.  Possession of paraphernalia includes any item typically used to inhale/ingest/inject/mask drugs, regardless of whether the item is being used for illegal purposes.   This includes, but is not limited to, bongs, water pipes, hookahs, rolling papers, syringes (unless for documented medical use) dab pens, coils, and any components that are used to add THC, CBD, or any other psychoactive or non-psychoactive cannabinoids to new or existing vaporized Inhalant systems.

Gambling - Gambling (including internet gambling) with the potential for monetary gain is not permitted in the residence halls.

Hover boards - Hover boards are prohibited on Franciscan University property. Hover boards include self- balancing scooters, battery-operated scooters, and hands-free segways.

Hammocks - Hammocks are only permitted in designated “hammock parks.” Hanging hammocks in any other location on campus is prohibited.

Liability - The University is not financially responsible for personal possessions lost or stolen from student rooms or damaged in any way while residing in the University residence halls. Students are encouraged to purchase renters’ insurance.

Musical Instruments – Students may play musical instruments in the residence halls during courtesy hours only. Residence Directors may also determine designated hours for the playing of musical instruments in the halls.  The Residence Life staff reserves the right to determine the number of instruments and the volume of the music. Music must be consistent with the mission of the University.

Posting and Advertising in the Residence Halls - All advertising and posting in the residence halls must be approved in advance and initialed either by the residence director/residence coordinator in that particular building or the assistant vice president of Student Life. Items without a signed approval or located in a non-designated area will be removed. Individuals and organizations are responsible for following this policy and may be sanctioned. Contact the Residence Director of the building for approved locations to post signs.  

Power Tools - The use of power tools (such as power saws, drills, etc.) is prohibited in residence halls.

Pranks - Residence Life discourages “pranking” in the halls as this often results in either damage or disruption of community life. Those participating in a prank may be subject to disciplinary action at the discretion of the Residence Life Staff

Reckless Activities - Activities that pose a threat of harm to residents or facilities are not permitted in the residence halls. These activities include, but are not limited to roller blading, skating, skateboarding, riding scooters, bicycling, running, throwing or bouncing balls, tossing Frisbees, water fights and snowball fights. Activities in parking lots and other areas adjacent to residence halls that threaten safety or property are not permitted. Residents are not permitted to climb trees on University property.

Sales/Solicitation - Sales and solicitation are prohibited campus wide without written authorization from Student Life. All fundraising requests must be submitted the vending committee for approval.

Security - The Director of Security is available Monday through Friday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm at 740-283-6319. Security protects and serves the campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For non-emergencies, call 740-283-6333. For an emergency, call 740-283-6911. Security escorts are available on campus upon request.

Residents should:

  • Lock their residence hall room
  • Refrain from leaving valuables unattended 
  • Notify residence hall staff or security of suspicious behavior.

Vapor Cigarettes – Residence Halls are smoke free facilities.  This includes the use of vapor cigarettes.

Windows – Students may not enter or exit the halls through windows. Window screens are to remain in place at all times.  Do not suspend decorations or other materials from Residence Hall windows.
