HST 342 The Crusades

Examines the history of a new type of warfare that emerged in medieval Europe, which was understood by participants to be both just and holy. The course surveysthe military campaigns that Christians and Muslims waged against each other for control of the Holy Land and the impact that these wars had on the relationship between Islam and Christianity down to the present day. In addition, it also explores the nature of crusader activity in other arenas, such as in southern France, north Africa, Spain, and Prussia, and significant aspects of crusader culture, including weaponry, military tactics, songs, and theological beliefs.Students will read and evaluate both the primary and secondary sources of the crusades.
