Pre-Pharmacy

Franciscan University has partnered with two schools to provide a pre-pharmacy program.  Students beginning their studies at Franciscan may complete a bachelor degree in biology or chemistry while continuing their professional education towards a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree at either Duquesne University or D'Youville College.

Pharmacy schools have different views on what academic preparation is needed for their pharmacy programs. Pre-pharmacy students meet with the pre-professional advisor to plan a program that will best prepare the student for the pharmacy school of the student's choice. This may mean as little as two years of chemistry, biology, social science and humanities courses at Franciscan and then a transfer to a four-year pharmacy school. Other students may choose to complete three years of chemistry, biology, social science and humanities courses at Franciscan and then  transfer to a four-year pharmacy school. Upon the successful completion of their first year of pharmacy school, students in a 3+4 program will be eligible to graduate from Franciscan with a BS degree in biology or chemistry from Franciscan University. Finally, some students choose to complete a major and graduate with a BA or BS degree at Franciscan before going to pharmacy school. The pre-professional advisor will help each individual student plan a program to reach his/her goal of admission to pharmacy school.
