Department Mission Statement

The Department of Political Science answers the call given by the Church of articulating a true understanding of the integration of faith, reason, and culture. The study of political life and more broadly of social, economic, legal, cultural, scientific, and human life questions, which is done in the Department’s programs, proceeds from a Catholic understanding of the human person, his social relationships, the natural law that governs his conduct and his final end in God.

Aims

Human Life Studies is an academic minor program that will lead students to a broader and deeper knowledge and understanding of the philosophical, ethical, theological, biological, legal, political, historical, and social dimensions of human life issues. With this background, students will be prepared to think, speak, and act intelligently in these crucial matters confronting contemporary culture.

Assessment Learning Goals

The focus of the interdisciplinary Human Life Studies Minor Program at Franciscan University is to:

  • Lead students to a broader and deeper knowledge and understanding of the philosophical, ethical, theological, biological, legal, political, historical, and social dimensions of human life issues.
  • Prepare students to think, speak, and act intelligently in these critical matters confronting contemporary culture.
  • Focus on the building up of a culture of life through the legal system.
  • Address topics that either directly concern human life issues or topics such as marriage and family life, economic justice, or social justice, which indirectly but decisively affect human life and dignity.
  • Provide a practical connection for students to a job in their major field or to a graduate school in their intended field of continued study.
