Is a general survey of Western art through visual and experiential approaches.

ART 206 ART Graphic Narrative

Is an introduction to the art studio practice of sequential narrative in the development of storyboards, concept art and illustration.  This course prepares the student to work in pre-production roles in media, bringing scripts and characters to life in visual form, as well as using the elements of design and composition to create complete works of graphic storytelling such as graphic novels, non-fiction memoirs and graphic journalism.

ART 210 Introduction to Portrait Drawing and Painting

This course will build on and strengthen skills taught in the other classes offered by the Fine Arts department in Drawing, Painting, and Iconography. By studying the portrait students will be formed through their work to embody the dignity of the person in art. In Gaming students will have a unique opportunity to work in person from historical masterpieces augmenting their Art History studies, which are an integral part of the Gaming experience. Beautiful and dignified figurative art has a tremendous power in countering a culture of death. Our goal is to create a revelation of a permanent truth embodied in an image through the use of materials an design.

ART 219 Sacred Art Studio

As an introduction to the world of sacred image- making, this course provides hands-on studio experience in creating sacred visual meaning with dramatic power and clarity using basic materials and elemental studio practices. Media include pencil, charcoal, white chalk, oil paint in both monochromatic and color modes, and sculpture. Students learn to compose with the building blocks of visual grammar – the Elements and Principles of Composition and Design. Students also attend lectures on how the formal elements of design convey and embody theological meanings.

ART 220 Iconography

Is an introduction to the realm of the sacred icon, including both a historical overview and a practical studio experience in icon-writing. This course provides hands-on studio experience in creating sacred visual meaning with dramatic power and clarity, using basic materials and elemental studio practices. Students learn to compose with the visual building blocks of iconographic grammar, including an understanding of the Elements and Principles of Composition and Design in sacred images.
