French, Bachelor of Arts

Program of Study

Bachelor of Arts Degree Requirements for the French Major:

Degree Requirements: 25 credit hours, including eight courses from FRN 300-400 level, and FRN 434 or FRN 435.

Students may substitute a maximum of two non-FRN-coded courses from among: HST 323 The Medieval World; HST 324 Renaissance and Reformation; HST 327 French Revolution; HST 339 Knighthood and Chivalry; HST 342 The Crusades. With permission (based on course content in a specific semester) the following may also be applied to the French major requirements: ENG 318 European Romanticism; ENG 350 Modern Drama; ENG 423 Readings in World Literature; ENG 430 Literary Criticism; PHL 420 Existentialism.

Students who are not prepared to enter the 300 level must begin with the Intermediate or Elementary-level courses as prerequisites. Placement in French courses will be determined by placement exam, waiver exam, or transfer credit. As not every incoming student will possess sufficient proficiency to enter the 300-level courses, the typical program sheet will reflect the program of a student who starts at the intermediate level.

All French majors are strongly encouraged to spend at least one semester or summer term of study abroad in a French-speaking nation or territory (typically France or Quebec) at a college or university in which the language of instruction is French. Credits earned during study abroad can be transferred to Franciscan University with departmental approval.
