Academic Organizations

Education is a bridge to professional life. To promote the spirit of community among majors and to bring together students and professional men and women in a student’s chosen field, many departments have associations and societies to further extracurricular activities. They also provide speakers, films, and field trips that are of interest to the entire University community.

Christian Students in Free Enterprise (CSFE)

A not-for-profit community organization whose mission is to engage and inspire students and communities with entrepreneurial activities that unite the principles of Christianity and the free enterprise system for the advancement of society through innovation, education, and the promotion of the human person by taking Christ into the marketplace.

Christopher Dawson Society

The Dawson Society associated with the Humanities and Catholic Culture major. The aim of the society is to provide out-of-class fellowship by holding lectures, including the annual Christopher Dawson Lecture, arranging energizing discussion groups, and organizing cultural trips to metropolitan areas such as Pittsburgh. Society members are HCC majors and all those affiliated with Franciscan University who share a love for humanities and Catholic culture.

Computer Science Club

The Computer Science Club gives students a place to gather and share ideas, code, and more. The goal is to help to develop coding skills in a fun environment. The Gemelli Society

The Gemelli Society was founded in 1964 to assist psychology, sociology, and social work majors in their development in these human sciences. The society provides programs with visiting academicians, addresses by professional human services personnel, films, and community services. The group is named in honor of the Franciscan friar physician, philosopher, theologian, and psychologist, Agostino Gemelli.

Graduate Counseling Association

The Graduate Counseling Association is open to all MA Clinical Mental Health Counseling students. The organization seeks to (1) build community among students through social, spiritual, and educational/vocational activities, (2) foster continual academic and spiritual development within the membership, and (3) assist the University at large through speakers and workshops focused on psychosocial and spiritual issues.

Instruments of Peace

The Instruments of Peace is a club for Franciscan University of Steubenville Social Work majors within the Gemelli Society. The purpose of the club is to allow social work students to provide support to one another, to provide educational and professional development activities, to promote an identity as a social worker, and to participate in community service activities.

Phi Alpha Honor Society

Phi Alpha is the national honor society for social work students, faculty, and practitioners. The purposes of Phi Alpha Honor Society are to provide a closer bond among students of social work and promote humanitarian goals and ideals. Invited members have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement in social work.

Physical Therapy Club

The Physical Therapy Club provides the opportunity to share useful information with members about the field of Physical Therapy and to help members network with Physical therapists in the Steubenville area. The club's goal is to prepare and inform members of the path to becoming a Physical Therapist. Membership is open to all Franciscan University students, staff, faculty, and administration.

Political Science Association

The Political Science Association enables interested students to probe and discuss political issues outside the classroom, to learn about career possibilities in politics, government, and law, and to build camaraderie among their fellow students in political science. Activities include lectures, career nights, panels, and discussions on current issues, trends, and philosophical questions about politics, as well as social gatherings and trips to visit governmental institutions. Membership is open to all students interested in politics, regardless of major.

PSI Alpha Tau

Psi Alpha Tau is Franciscan University’s chapter of Chi Sigma Iota. This is the honor society of graduate clinical mental health counseling programs. Chi Sigma iota is an international organization that was founded at Ohio University in 1986. The mission of Chi Sigma iota is to promote scholarship, research, professionalism, leadership, advocacy, and excellence in counseling.

Sigma Tau Delta

Sigma Tau Delta is the international English honor society. Part of the Association of College Honor Societies, it was founded in 1924 at Dakota Wesleyan University. The purposes of the Society are (a) to confer distinction for high achievement in English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies; (b) to promote interest in literature and the English language on local campuses and their surrounding communities; and (c) to foster the discipline of English in all of its aspects, including creative and critical writing. Membership in Sigma Tau Delta is an outward recognition of personal accomplishment. It also serves as an incentive for continued high scholarship. The chapter located at Franciscan University of Steubenville is the Omicron Iota chapter of the society.

St. Thomas Society

The purpose of the St. Thomas Society is to provide Franciscan University Theology graduate students the opportunity to grow in the skills required for intellectual vocation. The club fosters the intellectual vocation through training in the various programs offered at Franciscan, talks given by professors, discussions and spiritual training. Spiritual training provides the opportunity to make the member aware of the challenges that come with embracing the call to primary service in Christian education and provide strategies to create strong foundations within each member's life. Through meetings, scheduled talks, and specialized topic discussion forums, theology graduate students are given the opportunity to become more embraced within the intellectual vocation.

Student Council for Exceptional Children

The purpose of the Student Council for Exceptional Children (SCEC) is to bring awareness for and serve individuals with disabilities on campus and in the local community. As an official chapter of the national Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) our campus organization is dedicated to advancing the success of individuals with disabilities through advocacy, service, and meaningful relationships. SCEC participates in activities such as the local Special Olympics, fundraisers, hosting talks, movie showings, local church events for individuals with disabilities, and other service opportunities within the community. SCEC holds monthly meetings throughout the year as well as leadership opportunities.
