Admission Requirements

Admission to the MA program will be granted to those applicants who satisfy the basic qualifications and show high promise of success in the graduate program and pastoral ministry. Applicants are required to submit the following to the University’s Enrollment Services Office:

  1. An application to the Master of Arts in Catechetics and Evangelization online program.
  2. Official transcripts of all previous course work.  Unofficial transcripts may be used to grant conditional admission, but admission is not final until official transcripts are received.
  3. Three letters of recommendation speaking to the applicant's potential for success in graduate studies and catechetical ministry.  Recommendation forms are available from the University's Enrollment Services Office.

Admission will be based on these qualifications:

  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum quality point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  2. Determination by the Graduate Admissions Board of the candidate's potential to be successful in graduate studies and be effective and responsible in catechetical ministry.
A student may enter the program at the beginning of any term.  The fall term begins in late August, the spring term in January, and the summer term in May.

Background Courses

Ideally, students entering the program should have a BA in Catechetics, Religious Education, Theology or Religious Studies from an accredited college or university. However, students respond to God’s call to serve the Church from many different backgrounds and thus may enter the program without this training. When this is the case, additional undergraduate catechetics, theology and philosophy courses will be required for that student’s individual academic program. The undergraduate courses offered at Franciscan University of Steubenville would be cross-listed on the graduate pre-requisite level as follows:

Scripture:

CAT 520Scriptural Foundations of Catechetics

3

OR

THE 511/THE 211Principles of Biblical Study I

3

OR

THE 512/THE 212Principles of Biblical Study II

3

Catechetics:

CAT 517/CAT 204Catechetics

3

Philosophy:

PHL 511/PHL 211Metaphysics

3

Candidates who have not completed the above courses are invited to apply to the program and may be admitted to full graduate status. However, their program will be more extensive due to the addition of courses intended to compensate for their insufficient background in catechetics, theology or philosophy. This undergraduate background may also be fulfilled by taking comparable undergraduate courses at other accredited colleges or universities.

Students must achieve a B or better in each background course in order to proceed in the program.
